Lydia & Ken’s Wedding

The hand-made "Reserved for wedding limo" parking sign out front gave away which house was Lydia’s. She wasn’t expecting George and I at the house, but Boston traffic had been kind to us, so we decided to swing in before heading over to St. Clement’s to meet up with Kenny before the ceremony. You may remember Lydia and Ken from their engagement session in East Boston earlier this year. They’re a ton of fun to work with and love to laugh.

Lydia’s mom greeted us at the front door. She called up to Lydia to let her know we were there. Lydia was more than excited that we were there. As soon as we hit the second floor landing, Lydia was there with open arms and looked stunning in her Maggie Sottero wedding dress. She had emailed me a picture of it beforehand and I was immediately taken by how different it was. In person, it was that much more amazing – especially on Lydia. We met the two ladies who would participate in the ceremony, snapped a few photos and then headed to the church right outside of Powder House Square.

I grew up two blocks from Powder House Square. It always struck me that a "Square" that was actually a rotary was called a "Square." It didn’t make much sense to me. As I’ve mentioned previously, I grew up Protestant, but most of my neighborhood friends grew up Catholic. Our neighborhood Catholic church was St. Clement’s. My childhood friend Shawn went to C.C.D. there (I won’t tell you what he told me "C.C.D." stood for) and the O’Meara’s all went to church there too. I haven’t lived in the neighborhood for sixteen years, so it was neat to be back there to work. Needless to say, I didn’t need directions to the church.

When George and I arrived, Kenny was inside with a few of his relatives. I introduced him to George and then set about getting our gear in place for the ceremony. George snapped candids of the guests arriving. The sound of bagpipes filled the sanctuary.

In no time, it was time for the ceremony to begin. Kenny stood at the front of the church. The ladies walked in single file. Finally, Lydia walked down the aisle to Kenny. He shook hands with Lydia’s dad and took his bride by the arm. He was beaming.

Following the ceremony, we all went directly to the Hilton Boston Logan Airport. During the pre-wedding consultation, Lydia and Kenny decided to do all the formals there as there was no daylight and the hotel would be decorated for Christmas. We jumped in the truck and headed that direction. Lydia and Kenny jumped in their stretch H2 Hummer and did the same.

We had a lot of fun with the formals. The hotel was completely decked out in Christmas decorations. The main lobby gave us so many different backgrounds. Beth, the Catering Sales Manager at the Hilton and tonight’s event coordinator was one of the nicest coordinators I’ve worked with. She was completely accommodating and even enthusiastic about the photos. The lobby has a massive coffee bar (café) to one side with a massive wooden counter. I asked her at one point if there was any possibility of putting Lydia up on the bar. She looked at me and said she was game for anything. One of my favorite shots of the night came from that set.

Lydia and Kenny hired Patrick Durkin, a pianist and vocalist, for their reception. He played them into the room, sang and played for their first dance and then entertained the guests throughout the cocktail hour.

The rest of the evening was filled with laughing, dancing, great food and great company. We even had the opportunity to have Lydia and Ken’s photo taken with Santa. He was at the hotel for another function and Beth let us know she had the okay for us to take some photos. So much fun!!

Lydia and Ken – I’ll never grow tired of your laughter. I wish you many, many years of laughter and joy in your lives. Thanks for letting us share in your joy on your wedding day!

It was so much fun to watch this.  I must have at least ten shots of Lydia feeding her cake.  She had the best expresssions!

George and I worked on this shot together.  We had a few different ideas we were throwing around and we felt this was the strongest.  Love it!
