Suzette & Rob’s Wedding

They’ve know each other for two decades. They have had an incredible journey together. They have a beautiful daughter. They chose this moment and this place to celebrate their love and let the world know that they will never part.

I’ve encountered so many situations on wedding days when I first arrive, I never know what to expect when I knock on the hotel room door. Our arrival at the Hyatt Regency Newport was no different.  Suzette came to the door with a huge smile on her face. Her hair and make-up were done. She was now helping other people get ready before she put her dress on. Hiding (not well) behind Suzette’s smiling face was chaos. I’m sure my college professor Karl Giberson could give you a technical and scientifically accurate definition of "chaos" but I think he would agree that this scene was pretty close. I’m really not sure how many people, shoes, suitcases, curling irons, or dress bags there were in the suite, but there were more than enough from what I could tell. And what caught my attention more than anything wasn’t all the noise or the stuff strewn about the rooms. It was the fact that Suzette was so calm. Like this was an every day occurrence for her. While everyone else was sewing dresses back together, showering, putting on make-up or doing and re-doing hair styles, Suzette just took it all in with a smile. Amazing!

Once the chaos was over, the ladies headed outside to the ceremony where Rob and the rest of the guests awaited their arrival. The chairs were set facing Newport Harbor Lighthouse (a.k.a. Goat Island Lighthouse) with the Newport Bridge in the distance. What a beautiful spot for a ceremony! Following the ceremony, we took full advantage of the background and took the formals right in the same area.

The reception was held in one of the ballrooms of the Hyatt. It was surrounded on two sides by an amazing deck overlooking the harbor. One of the most unique features of the reception had nothing to do with the décor or the location though. It had to do with Rob. Rob is a DJ and decided ahead of time that he wanted to announce the wedding party into the reception himself. With the wireless mic in hand, Rob enthusiastically announced each member of the party, including himself and Suzette. There’s a first time for everything!

One thing I always enjoy about weddings is meeting people who are different than me and having experiences I never would have otherwise. Rob and Suzette are both Cape Verdian. I would guess that a majority of their guests were also Cape Verdian. What I loved is that Rob and Suzette had a Cape Verdian band playing for their reception. I had never heard many of the songs they played, but I was clearly in the minority. Suzette, Rob and all their friends and family celebrated the night away as the band’s music filled the room.

Suzette and Rob – what can I say? You had an amazing day at an amazing place with amazing people. I wish you many more decades of happiness together!
